چکیده

STRUBBE, J. H. AND J. GORISSEN. Meal patterning in the lactating rat. PHYSIOL. BEHAV. 25(5) 775-777, 1980.The present study was undertaken to investigate feeding behaviour of the lactating rat over the day-night cycle. Food intake was recorded continuously in six pregnant and subsequently lactating female rats with 10 pups each. Although there was a twofold increase of food intake during the first post partum week, the meal frequency did not increase above the level of previous weeks. Only the mean meal size increased. After this week food intake increased to three times the normal intake, meal size did not change but meal frequency increased in favour of daytime meals. It is suggested that with moderate caloric demands food intake regulation in the rat occurs through changes in meal size. With higher energy requirements, however, meal frequency is also affected. The possible causal factors involved in the change in feeding are discussed.

Effects of Supplementing Xylose‐Treated Soybean Meal or Untreated Corn Gluten Meal to Lactating Dairy Cows

This experiment was performed to investigate whether feeding xylose-treated soybean meal (XSBM) or corn gluten meal (CGM) is economically better under field conditions. Ninety-four multiparous early lactating Holstein cows (55±5 days in milk and 2.82±0.41 body condition score) were used in a completely randomized design. Cows were randomly assigned to one of two treatments: XSBM or CGM as the m...

Milk Production and Composition, and Intake of Holstein Lactating Cows Fed Diets with Partial Substitution of Soybean Meal with Flaked Field Pea

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of a partial substitution of soybean meal with field pea (Pisum sativum) in Holstein lactating dairy cow diets on dry matter intake, milk yield and composition, blood metabolites, rumen ammonia-N concentration and pH. Eighteen lactating Holstein cows were randomly assigned into three groups based on parity, days in milk, and mil...

Effect of Feeding of Various Types of Soybean Meal and Differently Processed Barley Grain on Performance of High Producing Lactating Holstein Dairy Cows

Twenty-four lactating Holstein dairy cows were used in a completely randomized design to investigate the effect of soybean meal (SM) and xylose protected soybean meal (XSM) in combination with ground (GB) or steam flaked (FB) barley on dry matter intake, milk production, rumen fermentation and blood responses. The experimental period lasted for 30 days. The diets consisted of the provision of 1...

Effect of pheromones on the plasma level of prolactin during pregnancy and lactating periods in female rat

Introduction: Pheromones play a great role in the reproductive and social behavior of animals. The main sources of pheromones are urine and paracrine secretions. Through the neuroendocrine system, prolactin is a safe parameter to measure and compare the effects of pheromones on the sexual, maternal and also lactating behavior. Methods: Female rats were divided into 19 groups (n=8). To measur...
